Allez culture!  Support the Europeana Project!

Unfortunately, the existence of Europeana as a source of discovery and inspiration for Europe’s newspapers and European culture as a whole is now under threat. This is because of a proposed 90% budget cut to the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), which funds Europeana.
Europeana and its related projects currently cost €30 million a year. The proposed new budget for the CEF is €1 billion. Competition for this funding comes from health, justice and safer internet programmes. If Europeana loses its funding, the hard work already put in to build Europeana into an innovative and unique resource will be lost.

Europeana works with galleries, libraries, archives and museums in almost every European country to make knowledge and culture available online. We connect everyone in Europe with their shared history and heritage – 27 million books, pictures, films and recordings so far. Together, we’re pioneering new ways to engage people in culture through websites, apps, software and social media, through sharing our expertise, business models and code, and through services for education and tourism. If Europeana loses its funding, the hard work already put in to build Europeana into an innovative and unique resource will be lost.

LIBIS is technical partner for the Europeana Inside project. Together with KU Leuven, LIBIS was involved in several other Europeana projects : Europeana Photography, Europeana Cloud en Europeana Libraries

British Library Conference in October: Evolution or Revolution? [Mon 14 and Tue 15 October, London]

This two-day conference organised by the British Library discusses how change and development in the working environment – in acquisition, technology, publishing, storage, formats, access, use – are defining and redefining the roles and responsibilities of collection care professionals, forcing us to ask tough questions of ourselves and our collections. Do we embrace such change as an opportunity to re-evaluate our collections and develop new models of care and stewardship? Or do we view it as a threat to traditional methods and traditional skills?

Who are the collection care professionals of today? What skills do they need to be practitioners and leaders in the collection care departments of tomorrow?

Network of European Museum Organisations (NEMO) - Annual Conference [1 - 3 November 2013, Bucharest]

This year, the National Network of Romanian Museums invited NEMO to hold its Annual Conference in Bucharest, Romania. From 1 - 3 November, representatives from European national museum organisations or other similar bodies, stakeholders from European cultural sectors and museum experts, will meet at the National Museum of Art of Romania and the Antipa Museum to discuss topics relevant to the European museum sector and to exchange ideas, expertise and experiences, to liaise and to network with their partners.

At this year’s conference, NEMO will focus on aspects that are closely connected with museums’ potential to build on the proximity to the audience:

The Digital Shift
What challenges and which opportunities come along with the digital shift for museums? How can they use ICT in order to connect people to their collections? How do they handle open questions, e.g. with regard to copyrights?

Towards an Active Civil Society
What are the demands and the potential that museums have to help build on an active civil society that relies on reflective citizens, being aware of their rights and responsibilities?

The Future EU Culture Strategy
What can the EU contribute to help the cultural sector – and in particular museums – serve their communities? How do museums fit into the EU’s strategy for culture?
