Eén op vier bedrijven maakt vandaag gebruik van cloudcomputing. Dat blijkt uit cijfers van Smart Business Strategies en van Computer Profile. Ondanks dat slechts een minderheid van de bedrijven reeds de stap naar de cloud zette, neemt het aantal gegadigden snel toe.
Op één jaar tijd steeg het aantal Belgische bedrijven in de cloud, zo blijkt uit onderzoek bij 400 respondenten van Smart Business Strategies, van 18% tot 23% . Computer Profile ziet 23% SaaS gebruiken, een verdubbeling op twee jaar tijd. In de onderwijssector, de dienstensector en bij industriële locaties is de groei in de afgelopen twee jaar het hoogst.
Als bedrijven zeggen dat cloud computing niet matuur is, zijn ze er waarschijnlijk zelf niet klaar voor.

SPDY moet verouderd HTTP-protocol verbeteren
Google demonstreert een nieuw experimenteel webprotocol dat webpagina’s veel sneller laadt dan het traditionele HTTP. Vooral het mobiele web kan enorm profiteren van SPDY. SPDY, wat je uitspreekt als SpeeDY, is een van de recepten uit de keuken van Google Developers, een laboratorium waarin de Amerikaanse zoekmachine manieren zoekt om het internet sneller te maken. Google stelt SPDY voor als een verbetering van het Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), het belangrijkste webprotocol dat browsers gebruiken om webpagina’s op te vragen en webservers om ze te versturen.

LIBIS ondertsteunt Open Access beleid
KU Leuven wil haar onderzoekers stimuleren om in Open Access te publiceren. Open Access (OA) biedt immers heel wat voordelen: onderzoeksresultaten worden niet alleen sneller, maar ook breder verspreid, en vaak frequenter geciteerd.
LIBIS ondersteunt deze actie en creëerde ondermeer een nieuwe zoekinterface voor KU Leuvenpublicaties. De Lirias-zoekbox kan gemakkelijk in webpagina’s geïntegreerd worden, wat de toegang tot de onderzoeksoutput alleen maar ten goede kan komen.
K.U.Leuven chooses Ex Libris Rosetta for Digital Preservation
The scalability, consortial support, and openness of Rosetta make it the ideal choice for K.U.Leuven and the LIBIS network.

Ex Libris Group® is delighted to announce that Belgium’s world-renowned K.U.Leuven has decided to enhance its Leuven Integrated Archive System (LIAS) by adding the Ex Libris Rosetta digital preservation system to the university’s suite of library products. Rosetta will enable the university to meet the long-term preservation needs of its library as well as those of archives, museums, and other libraries throughout Flanders that are served by the LIBIS network.
The LIBIS network, which provides information solutions to more than 30 institutions, will significantly improve its digital preservation offering through Rosetta by creating a unified digital infrastructure for the heterogeneous information held by libraries in the network. Rosetta’s support for consortia will centralize and optimize library services, increasing their efficiency and lowering the cost of ownership for LIBIS (www.libis.be).
K.U.Leuven, which already uses the full suite of Ex Libris products, will be combining Rosetta with the Primo® discovery and delivery solution to provide instant access to all resources preserved by Rosetta. In addition, LIAS will enable all LIBIS members to access Rosetta.
“In Rosetta, Ex Libris offers the only solution on the market today that is scalable and supports end-to-end long-term preservation for any type of format,” said Jo Rademakers, head of library automation at K.U.Leuven/LIBIS. “With the increasing importance of long-term preservation, it was crucial for us to find a solution that not only integrates with our existing suite of products but also provides us with the full range of preservation services. Rosetta delivers all of this. In addition, the consortial support enables us to offer long-term preservation as a service to libraries, archives, and museums, thus sparing them the trouble of managing hardware and applications.”
